Assam Gears Up for Bhupen Hazarika’s Birth Centenary, PM Modi to Attend Main Event
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a core committee meeting on August 29 to review preparations for the year-long birth centenary celebrations of music legend Bhupen Hazarika, beginning September 8.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend the main centenary event on September 13, during the first day of his two-day visit to Assam.
The celebrations will commence on September 8 with tributes at Hazarika’s memorial in Jalukbari, accompanied by cultural programmes across the state organised by the government and various stakeholders. Hazarika’s son, Tez Hazarika, joined the review meeting virtually and will be present as a state guest at the centenary event on September 13.
In a post on X, Amit Shah said, “Under the leadership of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji the Himanta Biswa Sarma government is fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Assam. Each and every Karyakarta of the BJP should dedicate themselves to building a prosperous Assam.”
The review meeting discussed cultural programmes, publications, and outreach events to be held not only in Assam but also in Arunachal Pradesh, Kolkata, New Delhi, and Mumbai. The chief minister stressed that the celebrations must reflect Hazarika’s towering contributions to music, culture, and society.
Sarma announced that the Government of India has approved the issuance of a ₹100 silver commemorative coin in Hazarika’s honour, calling it a fitting tribute to the maestro. He also directed the cultural affairs department to work closely with stakeholders to ensure the centenary becomes a people’s movement.
The foundation stone for a museum dedicated to Hazarika will also be laid as part of the centenary year. Additionally, Sarma thanked Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein for initiating celebrations in Roing on September 26, extending the homage beyond Assam’s borders.
