Assam: Goalpara Witnesses Massive Eviction Drive to Reclaim Encroached Government Land
Goalpara – A major eviction drive commenced this morning in Goalpara district, targeting approximately 1,500 bighas of government land in the Hasila Beel area that has been under illegal occupation. The operation, a joint effort by the civil administration and police, aims to clear 667 unauthorised households and various other illegal structures.
Official sources revealed that the encroached land also housed five schools and a Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) project, all operating without official sanction on public property. Prior to the drive, the administration had issued formal notices to all illegal occupants and made public announcements via banners and loudspeakers, urging them to vacate the premises by June 15, 2025.
Despite the clear warnings, numerous structures, including residential houses, boundary walls, shops, other buildings, and even private water pipelines and bore wells, remained on the site and are now slated for demolition as the operation progresses. Goalpara Police have deployed extensive security measures to ensure peace and order throughout the drive and prevent any untoward incidents. Officials emphasised that this eviction is part of a larger initiative to reclaim government land for public welfare projects and sustainable development.
