Assam: Gohpur Police Seize 8.8 kg of Fake Gold Bars in Major Bust

Guwahati, August 17, 2024 In a significant operation, Gohpur police intercepted a night bus and seized 8.8 kilograms of fake gold bars. The raid was conducted in front of the Hawajan police station after officers received a tip-off about the contraband. The bus, registered as AS 15 C 9679 and named Rishan, was en route from Gogamukh to Barpeta Road.

Acting on specific intelligence, police halted the bus and began searching for the suspected counterfeit goods. The driver and conductor reported that six passengers had boarded the bus in Laluk. Upon inspection, officers discovered the fake gold concealed in six bags, with no one on board claiming ownership.

Police have detained ten individuals for questioning, suspecting that the passengers from Laluk were involved in transporting the counterfeit gold. The investigation is ongoing to determine the source and intended destination of the fake bars.

This seizure follows a similar incident earlier this month when Doom Dooma police detained a woman carrying approximately 5 kilograms of counterfeit gold coins in Assam’s Tinsukia district. The arrest took place in Rupai Siding after a local resident, Dr. Bora, reported the woman’s suspicious attempt to sell him the fake coins. Acting on the tip-off, police confirmed the coins were counterfeit and apprehended the woman.

These incidents highlight the growing issue of counterfeit gold trafficking in the region, prompting law enforcement to intensify efforts to curb such illegal activities.
