Assam Government Announces Austerity Measures and Cultural Honor Amidst Tightened Security at Guwahati Airport
The Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has implemented a series of fiscal adjustments, temporarily curtailing spending on seminars, events, and foreign trips for ministers and officials. This move comes as a response to the current economic climate, with the government prioritizing judicious use of public funds. A temporary halt has also been placed on the procurement of new vehicles, barring those needed for police and security forces, and a shift towards virtual meetings is being encouraged to minimize large gatherings.
In a significant cultural announcement, Chief Minister Sarma revealed the decision to rename Dibrugarh Airport in honor of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, a revered cultural icon. A special session of the Assam Legislative Assembly is scheduled for next month to formally ratify this decision, marking a tribute to Dr. Hazarika’s enduring legacy.
Furthering its commitment to welfare, the Assam cabinet has approved the ‘Eti Koli Duti Paat’ scheme, timed with the bicentenary celebration of Assam tea. This initiative will provide a one-time financial assistance of ₹5,000 to each permanent and temporary worker in the state’s tea gardens, acknowledging their vital contribution to Assam’s heritage.
Meanwhile, the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, the Northeast’s sole international airport, continues its full operations under heightened security protocols. Passengers are advised to arrive well in advance of their flights, anticipating longer wait times due to the enhanced security measures. Airport authorities have issued guidelines, urging passengers to cooperate with security personnel and adhere to all prescribed procedures, ensuring a smooth yet secure travel experience.
