Assam Government Clarifies 24×7 Business Policy, Bars and Liquor Shops Exempted
Guwahati: The Assam Government has revoked its decision to extend operating hours for bars and liquor shops, clarifying that the newly announced 24×7 business policy will not apply to these establishments. The announcement came shortly after the state cabinet’s decision to allow round-the-clock operations for shops and commercial enterprises, aiming to boost economic activity.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that while the policy intends to enhance local trade and generate employment, liquor stores and bars will continue to operate within their existing time limits. “The government has decided to extend operating hours for shops and establishments. However, this extension does not apply to liquor stores and bars. All concerned parties should note this clarification,” he said.
The decision, announced on March 20, 2025, is expected to provide greater flexibility for retailers, small vendors, and the service sector while catering to the demands of a rapidly growing economy. Guwahati, a major transit hub due to its extensive train and flight connectivity, stands to benefit significantly from the policy, as extended business hours could accommodate late-night travelers and boost commercial activity.
CM Sarma emphasized that this progressive move would not only strengthen Assam’s economic landscape but also create new employment opportunities, reinforcing the state’s reputation as a business-friendly destination. While the exemption for liquor shops and bars ensures regulatory control, the broader policy aims to foster a thriving commercial environment, benefiting both businesses and consumers alike.
