Assam Government Debunks Myths About Smart Meters, Highlights Consumer Benefits

Guwahati, 10th September: The Assam Government, through the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL), has addressed and debunked prevalent myths about smart meters, emphasizing their significant advantages for consumers. According to the government’s statement, smart prepaid meters are designed to enhance energy conservation and cost efficiency. Contrary to widespread beliefs, these smart meters do not lead to increased electricity bills. In fact, users have reported up to a 50% reduction in consumption compared to their previous postpaid periods.

The statement also highlighted the convenience of smart meters. They facilitate easy recharging, provide an emergency credit of ₹300, and allow for old bills to be paid in small daily installments. Additionally, smart meters support the integration of solar rooftop installations at no extra cost and include a Tariff of the Day policy, which offers access to cheaper power options.

The government assured that smart meters deliver accurate measurements, comparable to traditional meters. For verification, consumers can compare their current bills with those from the same month last year or request APDCL to install a non-smart meter alongside their smart meter. Concerns or inquiries regarding smart meters and electricity bills can be addressed by contacting APDCL at 1912, 7575999666, or 8876100100.
