Assam Government Elevates Food Security Measures, Distributes Free Ration Cards to 42 Lakh Additional Beneficiaries

Guwahati, 31st January: In a noteworthy move to fortify food security, the Assam government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has expanded its National Food Security Act (NFSA) outreach by providing free ration cards to an additional 42 lakh beneficiaries. The inauguration, taking place in Chief Minister Sarma’s constituency, Jalukbari, marked a crucial step in the state’s commitment to ensuring ample food access for all citizens. Each family member covered by the new ration cards is entitled to receive 5 kilograms of rice every month without any cost during the designated “anna sewa saptah.”

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Envisions Ration Card as a Tool Against Poverty Traps

Expressing his sentiments on the initiative, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the importance of the ration card as a tool preventing households from falling into poverty traps. He shared that by 2026, the government aims to include all ration cardholders under the Orunodoi scheme. The Chief Minister highlighted the achievement of near saturation in free ration distribution during the Anna Sewa se Jan Sewa effort, distributing 1.2 lakh MT of rice to over 60 lakh people. The comprehensive approach integrates health coverage and raises the income limit for availing ration cards, extending the scheme’s benefits to a broader segment of the population.

Integration of Health Coverage and Expanded Benefits

The new beneficiaries will not only receive food security through the NFSA but will also enjoy health coverage of Rs 5 lakh in government hospitals and designated nursing homes within the state. The income limit for obtaining a ration card has been raised from Rs 2 lakh per annum to Rs 4 lakh, widening the scope of the scheme. CM Sarma emphasized that social-sector schemes, including the Antyodaya Anna Yojana, prioritize the disadvantaged sections of society, aligning with the commitment of the central administration led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to support those in need.

Holistic Welfare Measures for Ration Card Holders

In addition to food security and health coverage, ration cardholders will benefit from other government initiatives, including the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and the Ayushman Bharat and Ayushman Asom healthcare schemes. Future plans include providing life insurance and accidental insurance coverage for ration cardholders, enhancing the overall welfare measures associated with the ration card system. This comprehensive approach underscores the Assam government’s dedication to uplift the living standards of its residents, ensuring that no family is left behind in the pursuit of a secure and healthy life.
