Assam Government Forms SIT to Tackle Rising Online Trading Scams
Guwahati, 8th September: In response to a growing number of complaints related to fraudulent online trading platforms, the Assam government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate these scams. The SIT will focus on cases where unsuspecting investors have been duped by fraudulent schemes.
Alongside the SIT’s probe, the government has referred the matter to the Information Technology (IT) department and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate financial irregularities and possible money laundering activities associated with these scams.
This initiative follows a statewide crackdown on illegal financial dealings by Assam Police. In a related case, Lance Naik Saroj Deka, a member of Assam CID, was dismissed from service on September 7 for his involvement in unauthorized deposit schemes. His dismissal was ordered by Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh under Article 311(2)(b) of the Indian Constitution and Rule 10(ii) of the Assam Services. DGP Singh announced the dismissal on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “Lance Naik Saroj Deka of @AssamCid, who has been found to be actively involved in unregulated deposit schemes, stands dismissed from service today.”
In another action, Inspector Jitumoni Deka, Officer-in-Charge of Golaghat Police Station, was attached due to alleged connections with individuals involved in these schemes.
The Assam Police have been conducting operations against unregulated deposit schemes across 14 districts, leading to the registration of 28 cases, the arrest of 59 individuals, and the issuance of 22 lookout circulars (LOCs) for those evading arrest. These cases are being investigated under the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act, 2019, along with applicable sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Samhita.
