Assam Government Increases Dearness Allowance for Employees Ahead of Diwali Celebrations

Guwahati — In a move aimed at benefiting state government employees, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday that the Dearness Allowance (DA) will increase from 50 percent to 53 percent, effective December. The 3 percent hike will be retroactive from July, providing much-needed financial relief to employees.

Speaking to the media after a cabinet meeting, CM Sarma detailed the adjustments, stating, “State government employees used to receive 50 percent Dearness Allowance earlier. With this increase, they will receive 53 percent DA with their December salaries, which translates to a 3 percent increment.” He also confirmed that employees will receive arrears for four months, with 25% of the dues payable in December, January, February, and March.

This announcement follows a similar increase approved by the Union Cabinet for central government employees earlier this month.

The Union’s decision also included a corresponding hike in Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners, further reflecting the government’s commitment to support its workforce.

Additionally, CM Sarma announced a timely adjustment regarding salary disbursement, ensuring that employees will receive their November salaries starting tomorrow. This initiative is designed to alleviate any financial burdens during the festive season, particularly as Diwali approaches. “We have enhanced the salary date for this month so that all employees can receive their salaries before Diwali,” he said.

The combined effect of the DA increase and early salary disbursement is expected to provide a significant boost to the morale and financial stability of Assam’s state government employees as they prepare for the festive celebrations.
