Assam Government Introduces Assam Anand Marriages Registration Rules, 2023, Honoring Sikh Traditions

Guwahati, 3rd August: In a commendable move to recognize and respect the customs of the Sikh community in the state, the Assam Government has decided to formulate the Assam Anand Marriages Registration Rules, 2023.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the significant decision on Twitter, stating, “Yesterday in the Cabinet, we took an important decision that will benefit our Sikh brothers and sisters in Assam.”

The newly introduced rules aim to officially acknowledge and register Sikh marriages conducted under the Anand Marriage Act of 1909, which is specifically designed to apply to marriages within the Sikh community, honoring their unique customs and rites.

It is important to note that the Act applies exclusively to Sikh marriages, excluding marriages between individuals of different religions or those declared null and void by the judiciary. This approach ensures the preservation of the sanctity of Sikh marriages while respecting the diverse marriage customs of various communities.

The implementation of the “Assam Anand Marriages Registration Rules, 2023” is a momentous occasion for the Sikh community residing in Assam, allowing them to uphold their cultural heritage and traditions. With these rules in place, more than 20,000 members of the Sikh community in the region now have the opportunity to officially register their marriages under the Anand Marriage Act, 1909.
