Assam Government Issues Directive: No Second Marriage for Government Officers/Employees Without Permission
Guwahati, 26th October: In a significant development, the Assam government has issued an order that explicitly forbids government officers and employees from entering into a second marriage without the prior permission of the state government.
This directive comes as a notable policy change, with serious consequences for any violations.
The policy, as per reports, will require any government officer or employee who intends to marry for the second time to obtain official permission from the state government.
Any deviation from this requirement will result in hefty fines and, notably, the possibility of facing a departmental inquiry.
This was announced by IAS Niraj Verma, Principal Secretary to the Government of Assam in an order issued on Thursday.
Not only this, if necessary the retirement rule may also be applicable, the order stated.
The order read, “No Government servant who has a wife living shall contract another marriage without first obtaining the permission of the Government, notwithstanding that such subsequent marriage is permissible under the personal law for the time being applicable to him.”
