Assam Government Launches Ambitious Rang Ghar Beautification Project for Cultural Preservation and Tourism Boost
Guwahati, 1st February: The Assam government, under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, embarks on an ambitious initiative to renovate and enhance the iconic Rang Ghar in Sivasagar, a symbol of the Ahom dynasty’s architectural heritage. The project aims not only to give Rang Ghar a facelift but also to position it on the World Tourism Map, recognizing its historical and cultural significance.
Chief Minister Sarma expressed the government’s commitment to preserving indigenous monuments, focusing on the Ban-Phi and Bhumi Pujan ceremonies for the Rang Ghar beautification project. The initiative involves acquiring land from the people, ensuring their involvement in the project while maintaining the heritage area and preventing encroachment.
Taking to his X handle, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “Preserving indigenous monuments and traditions is a key area of focus for our Government. Will be amidst the people of Sivasagar shortly for the Ban-Phi and Bhumi Pujan of the Rang Ghar beautification project; an enduring icon of Assam’s civilisational heritage.”
The total project area spans 83 bighas, including 5 bighas of government land and 78 bighas of acquired patta land. Built in 1744 A.D., Rang Ghar is Asia’s first amphitheatre, known for its octagonal base and royal sports pavilion function. The renovation plan, overseen by Chief Minister Sarma, includes constructing a state-of-the-art auditorium, gallery, MP theatre, and a heritage village on the acquired land.
This project aligns with the broader effort to develop, protect, and preserve significant sites like Charaideo Maidam and Lachit Maidam, with aspirations to include Charaideo Maidam in UNESCO’s world heritage sites list. The transformation of Rang Ghar is anticipated to boost tourism and offer visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the rich history and culture of the Ahom era, reflecting the government’s commitment to revitalizing Assam’s historical landmarks.
