Assam Government Launches Distribution of Soil Health Cards to Farmers, Aims for Atmanirbhar Assam
Northeast Desk, 7th October: In a significant step towards boosting agricultural productivity and supporting the state’s farmers, the Assam government launched the distribution of Soil Health Cards (SHC) to over four lakh farmers. At an official event held in Guwahati, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the government’s plan to distribute around 10 lakh SHCs, with four lakh already prepared for immediate issuance.
Addressing the gathering, CM Sarma emphasized the pivotal role of farmers in Assam’s Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) mission, stating, “Our Krishak bandhus (farmer friends) are the anchors in our mission of Atmanirbhar Assam. I am dedicating several initiatives for our farmers today.”
As part of the state’s agricultural development efforts, the number of soil testing laboratories has been increased from five to 26, ensuring better monitoring of soil quality across Assam. The distribution of SHCs is expected to help farmers make informed decisions about nutrient management, leading to improved crop yields and sustainable farming practices.
In addition to the SHC distribution, the event saw the handing over of agricultural machinery to farmers and the inauguration of agriculture knowledge centres. Sarma announced plans to establish 816 village agriculture equipment banks, a significant increase from the previous 80 such banks, aimed at providing better access to modern farming tools.
The chief minister also launched 96 agriculture knowledge centres and 93 agriculture development offices, further reinforcing the state’s commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector and enhancing farmers’ access to resources and information.
With these initiatives, the Assam government aims to transform the state’s agricultural landscape, empowering farmers and driving towards a more self-sufficient and prosperous future for the region.
