Assam Government Launches Initiative to Address AADHAR Registration Issues for NRC-listed Citizens

Guwahati, July 22 The Assam government has launched a critical initiative to address biometric registration problems for citizens listed in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) but lacking AADHAR numbers. The state administration is taking urgent steps to generate AADHAR cards for these individuals.

District AADHAR Cells have issued directives to District Commissioners, instructing them to identify and compile a list of NRC-listed individuals facing biometric issues that have impeded their AADHAR registration. Circle Officers have been given a one-week deadline to submit both hard and soft copies of this list to the District AADHAR Cells.

The directive emphasizes the need for an inclusive AADHAR generation process: “To ensure that all persons within your Circle jurisdiction are covered, please survey and list NRC-named individuals whose AADHAR has not been generated due to biometric issues. Submit the report urgently within a week.”

The problem stems from the NRC process, during which many individuals struggled to apply for AADHAR due to difficulties in providing necessary citizenship documents before the publication of NRC Drafts in 2017 and 2018. Although some names were included in the complete NRC draft of 2019, biometric data for many individuals was not captured, leaving them without AADHAR numbers. This has obstructed their access to central government benefits and various schemes.
