Guwahati, August 21, 2024 In a significant initiative to celebrate the bicentenary of Assam Tea and capitalize on its tourism potential, the Assam government has unveiled an ambitious scheme to financially support select tea gardens. The scheme is set to transform these estates into premier tourist destinations, attracting visitors from around the world.

Under this initiative, tea gardens that meet specific criteria will receive financial assistance of up to Rs 2 crore each. This investment aims to upgrade the infrastructure of these gardens, enhancing their appeal to tourists. Recently, 34 tea gardens were selected to benefit from the scheme, marking a key step towards establishing Assam as a leading tea tourism destination.

The scheme is designed to improve tourist facilities within these tea gardens, encouraging private tea companies to actively promote tea tourism. A major focus is the development of modern amenities, such as visitor centers, accommodation, and recreational areas, to attract international tourists.

In addition to infrastructure development, the initiative emphasizes coordination among tea industry stakeholders, including state tourist operators, to build a thriving tea tourism sector. It also aims to promote diverse activities, such as tea leaf plucking, nature walks, trekking, and golfing, providing visitors with a comprehensive and engaging experience of Assam’s tea estates.

Moreover, the scheme seeks to highlight the rich cultural and socio-economic heritage of Assam’s tea tribes, offering tourists an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the region’s unique traditions and way of life.

With this initiative, Assam is poised to enhance its global reputation as not only a producer of world-renowned tea but also as a vibrant and culturally rich tourist destination.
