Northeast Desk, 7th October: The Assam government has kicked off State Road Safety Week, from October 7-13, aiming to promote responsible driving and enhance road safety across the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to highlight the importance of safe driving, urging the public to commit to the pledge of “drive safe, arrive safe.”

The Transport Department has issued a set of comprehensive guidelines to raise awareness and reduce road accidents in the state, with a special emphasis on safe driving practices during the festive season. These guidelines include:

  1. Watch Your Speed: Over 65% of road accidents in Assam are due to overspeeding. Drivers are urged to slow down and obey speed limits.
  2. Obey Traffic Rules: Traffic signals and lane discipline must be respected.
  3. Avoid Distracted Driving: Drivers should refrain from texting, calling, or engaging in other distractions while on the road.
  4. Wear Seat Belts/Helmets: Ensure all passengers wear seat belts, and helmets are mandatory for two-wheeler riders.
  5. No Drunk Driving: Driving under the influence of alcohol or any intoxicants is a major cause of accidents.
  6. Protect the Vulnerable: Extra caution is advised near pedestrians, cyclists, and children.

Transport Minister Keshab Mahanta also extended greetings on the occasion of Durga Puja, while emphasizing the need for heightened road safety during the festivities. Mahanta noted the rise in road accidents due to reckless driving, stressing the importance of awareness and adherence to safety norms.

“It is unfortunate that dangerous and unsafe driving has led to the increasing number of road accidents in our state. Many have lost their lives or sustained serious injuries, resulting in permanent disabilities,” Mahanta stated. He urged all drivers and pedestrians to be mindful of road safety guidelines, reiterating that lack of skill, ignorance of road warnings, and violations of safety norms are major contributors to frequent road mishaps.
