Assam Government Mulls CBI Probe into Expanding Online Trading Scam

Guwahati, 8th September: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday that the state government is considering recommending a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the illegal online trading scam if required. The move comes as concerns grow over the widespread impact of the scam on investors across the state.

Speaking to the media, Sarma highlighted the significant progress made in the ongoing investigation. “So far, 59 arrests have been made, 22 Look-Out Circulars (LOCs) issued, and 14 Special Investigation Teams (SITs) formed,” he revealed. The scam, involving multiple online trading firms, reportedly circumvented regulations set by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), resulting in substantial financial losses for many.

Sarma emphasized the collaboration between state agencies: “The Assam Police, Enforcement Directorate, and Income Tax Department are working together. At the district level, local police are handling individual cases, while the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is supervising the overall operation from the headquarters.”

When asked about delays in apprehending certain suspects, Sarma assured the public that law enforcement would prevail. “No one can evade the police for long,” he said confidently.

Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh also provided updates on social media, noting that 28 cases have been registered across 14 districts, leading to the 59 arrests. “We have initiated 22 LOCs for individuals who have not cooperated with the investigation,” Singh stated.

Singh further mentioned that disciplinary actions had been taken against police personnel found involved in the schemes. Lance Naik Saroj Deka was dismissed from service, while Inspector Jitumoni Deka was suspended, pending further investigations.
