Assam Government Nears Finalization of Polygamy Ban Bill
Guwahati, 3rd September: The Assam Government is actively preparing to present a bill in the state assembly, set to outlaw polygamy, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma indicating that the legislative proposal is swiftly advancing, aiming for finalization within the next 45 days.
In a bid to ensure transparency and inclusivity, the state administration proactively sought public feedback regarding the proposed legislation. This initiative generated significant public engagement, resulting in a total of 149 suggestions. Impressively, out of these submissions, 146 recommendations voiced staunch support for the bill, highlighting substantial public backing for the ban on marrying multiple spouses. However, it is worth noting that three organizations have expressed their opposition to the proposed law.
This proactive approach by the Assam Government underscores its commitment to addressing issues related to polygamy, and the overwhelming response from the public in favor of implementing this ban reflects the substantial momentum behind the cause.
