Assam Government Reaffirms Support for Community Durga Pujas
Guwahati, 8th October: In a strong commitment to preserving and promoting Assam’s cultural heritage, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on October 8 that the state government will continue to support community Durga Pujas. Speaking at a recent event, Sarma emphasized the significance of these celebrations in fostering Sanatan Sanskriti (eternal culture), stating, “We are committed to supporting community Durga Pujas in their endeavour to take our Sanatan Sanskriti forward. I hope, with our humble contribution, there will be no difficulty in serving Maa Durga.”
This announcement comes in the wake of comments made by Assam BJP MLA Manab Deka on October 7, who pointed out the government’s financial contributions to Durga Puja celebration committees in the Lakhimpur Assembly constituency. Deka mentioned the attendance of local Puja Committee members and Lakhimpur District Commissioner Lachit Kumar Das during the announcement, highlighting the government’s collaborative efforts to enhance the festivities.
In line with its commitment, the Assam government had previously declared that it would provide grants of Rs 10,000 to each Puja pandal for the Durga Puja celebrations in 2023. This initiative aims to boost community involvement and ensure a vibrant and inclusive celebration of the festival, reflecting Assam’s rich cultural heritage and fostering unity among its diverse communities.
The support from the government has been welcomed by local Puja committees, who are enthusiastic about the upcoming festivities and the resources that will help enrich the celebrations dedicated to Goddess Durga.
