Assam Government Reserves Additional MBBS Seats for Bhutanese Students
Guwahati, 1st May: In a significant move to strengthen the longstanding ties between India and Bhutan, the Assam Government announced on April 30 the reservation of three additional MBBS seats for Bhutanese students in the state’s medical colleges, bringing the total reserved seats to five.
The decision to increase the number of reserved seats for Bhutanese students was approved by the Assam Cabinet during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on November 1, 2023. The reserved seats will be available at Nalbari Medical College Hospital and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital in Barpeta.
The Embassy of India in Thimphu issued a press release confirming the allocation of the additional MBBS seats, stating that the decision was made following an announcement during the visit of His Majesty the King of Bhutan to India in November 2023. The initiative aims to strengthen collaboration between India and Bhutan in the field of STEM education and skills development.
With the addition of three new reserved seats, Bhutanese students will now have five MBBS seats available in medical colleges across Assam. The Royal Civil Service Commission of the Royal Government of Bhutan, in coordination with the Embassy of India, Thimphu, will oversee the selection process for eligible candidates based on National Medical Council and NEET guidelines.
This initiative reflects the deep-rooted partnership between India and Bhutan and underscores their commitment to fostering educational opportunities and enhancing bilateral relations.
