Assam Government Resolves Aadhaar Card Issuance for 9.35 Lakh Residents After Four-Year Delay

Guwahati, 28th August: In a significant breakthrough, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government has successfully intervened to resolve a long-standing issue affecting the issuance of Aadhaar cards for 9.35 lakh residents. These applications had been stalled for over four years due to complications with biometric data and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Chief Minister Sarma revealed that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) had blocked the issuance of Aadhaar cards for individuals who provided biometric data between February and August 2019. The challenge stemmed from difficulties in linking the NRC with Aadhaar data.

On July 29, 2024, the Assam government formally requested intervention from the central government to address the issue. In response, the Centre directed UIDAI on August 27, 2024, to proceed with the issuance of Aadhaar cards for these individuals.

CM Sarma expressed his appreciation for the swift response from the Union Home Minister, stating, “I met with the Union Home Minister and extend my heartfelt thanks for his prompt action in addressing this critical issue.” This development marks a crucial resolution to ongoing concerns regarding the identification and rights of Assam’s residents.
