Assam Government to Revamp 252 Schools with Rs 1,800 Crore Investment
Guwahati: The Assam government is set to transform the infrastructure of 252 state-run schools across the state, with an investment of over Rs 1,800 crore.
This initiative aims to upgrade the facilities of rural schools, enhancing their quality and accessibility.
Mamata Hojai, Director of Secondary Education, revealed that these schools were selected from each of Assam’s 126 assembly constituencies, following budget announcements made last year.
The project, funded under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), will see the construction of new buildings for the selected vernacular schools.
“We are upgrading the infrastructure of these schools as part of a project under the RIDF,” said Hojai, adding that the selection process was based on the suggestions of the respective MLAs. Construction has already commenced in most schools, with completion expected by next year.
Each school will receive an investment of Rs 7-8 crore, bringing the total project cost to Rs 1,827 crore.
Assam’s Finance Minister, Ajanta Neog, had previously outlined in the 2024-25 budget that a larger initiative would overhaul 322 schools with an allocation of Rs 2,369.86 crore.
While Hojai refrained from commenting on whether these schools would transition to dual-medium institutions with the addition of English, she assured that the government would make a decision on the matter in due course.
Prominent schools covered by this project include Patacharkuchi Vidyapith in Bajali, Earle HS School in Cachar, Graham Bazar Girls’ High School in Dibrugarh, and Natun Fatasil Town High School in Guwahati, among others.
