Assam Government to Set Up Lachit Borphukan Memorial in Jorhat

Guwahati: The Assam government will erect a memorial to the legendary warrior Lachit Borphukan of the Ahom dynasty in the Jorhat district.

The Assam government has given engineering and construction firm Ahluwalia Contracts (India) the go-ahead to build the Ahom general Lachit Moidam Memorial and Cultural Complex at Lahdoigarh of Jorhat.

The construction company disclosed the project’s anticipated price in a regulatory statement to the stock exchanges on Monday. The project is estimated to be worth Rs 120.23 crore.

The Assam government has chosen to build a cultural centre to honour and preserve the bravery of Ahom general Lachit Borphukan.

The week-long commemorations for Ahom general Lachit Borphukan’s 400th birthday, meanwhile, got underway on Friday with a march past of diverse uniformed men and women to honour the bravery and sacrifice he shown in repelling the Mughal forces.

The last leg of the celebrations will be taken to the national capital – Vigyaan Bhawan — from November 23 to 25.

On November 23, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will officially open an exhibition. On November 24, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will serve as the event’s special guest, and on November 25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will perform the exhibition’s closing ceremony.

The Assam government is making large-scale efforts to honour the revered memory of the soldier both inside and outside the state by bringing war hero Lachit Borphukan Sarma to the nation’s capital.

Lachit Borphukan led the Ahom army during the famous battle of Saraighat, which took place in 1671. The Mughal invasion into the Assamese territory was resisted fiercely and successfully by Lachit Borphukan and his gallant soldiers.

One of India’s finest military figures is Lachit Borphukan.
