Assam Government Transfers School Staff After Student Death Incident
Guwahati, 26th September: In the wake of a tragic incident at Padumpukhuri High School in Assam’s Sipajhar, the Assam government has transferred the principal-in-charge and 11 other staff members following the death of a class nine student, Bhabesh. The student was reportedly assaulted by a classmate on Monday, September 23, leading to his collapse and eventual death at the hospital.
State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu confirmed the decision on social media, citing negligence in handling the situation. In his post on X (formerly Twitter), Minister Pegu stated, “In response to the tragic incident at Padumpukhuri High School, 12 staff members, including the principal-in-charge, have been transferred due to negligence.” The principal of Burhinagar Senior Secondary School has been appointed to take over at Padumpukhuri High School.
In addition to a police investigation, the School Education Department has also initiated its own inquiry to determine the circumstances that led to the student’s death. Bhabesh had reportedly been threatened by a group of youths the day before the fatal assault, which has further deepened concerns in the local community.
A teacher recounted the chaos following the incident, explaining that despite immediate first aid and calling an ambulance, Bhabesh remained unresponsive and was later referred to Mangaldai Civil Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident has triggered widespread shock in the region, with calls for stronger measures to ensure the safety and well-being of students in schools.
