Assam Government Withdraws Security from ULFA-I Chief Paresh Baruah’s Residence Amid Peace Talks
Guwahati, 19th January: In a significant move, the Assam state government has withdrawn security forces from the residence of Paresh Baruah, the Commander-in-chief of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), located in Chabua. This security measure, in place since 2000, aimed at ensuring the safety of Baruah, a prominent figure in the ULFA-I group. The sudden withdrawal involves three security personnel responsible for home security and one security guard.
The decision to withdraw security forces comes amidst ongoing efforts to engage in peace talks with ULFA-I, raising questions about the government’s motives. The timing is crucial, coinciding with recent peace initiatives in the region. A tripartite peace agreement was signed just days before between the Centre, Assam government, and ULFA, marking a historic moment and signaling the end of decades of violence.
The unexpected withdrawal could be interpreted as a strategic move by the government to build trust during the peace talks. It might be viewed as a gesture of goodwill or an effort to create a conducive environment for dialogue, emphasizing the commitment to a new era of prosperity for the northeastern state. The recent drone activity around Baruah’s residence could add a layer of symbolic significance to this development.
