Assam Government Yet to Submit Revised Draft for Deepor Beel Eco-Sensitive Zone Declaration

Guwahati, 9th December: The Assam government is currently in the process of finalizing its revised draft notification declaring Deepor Beel as an eco-sensitive zone. This follows a proposal presented to the cabinet on November 16, 2023, with the intent of addressing modifications and seeking clarifications.

The forest department’s representative informed the court that the cabinet is actively involved in reviewing and refining the revised draft notification. Notably, the court has set a deadline of January 18, 2024, for issuing the notification; otherwise, the concerned secretary must provide an affidavit explaining the delay and progress made.

Additionally, the court has directed the State Pollution Control Board and the Water Resource Department to submit their respective affidavits.

In a recent development, the court recommended the construction of sewage treatment plants at all entry points leading to Deepor Beel, the sole Ramsar site in the state. This proposal aims to prevent the potential discharge of harmful chemicals or pollutants into the lake, aligning with efforts to conserve and protect this vital ecosystem.

The bench of judges outlined 12 measures and suggestions to the Assam government, emphasizing that their implementation could significantly contribute to the preservation, beautification, and enhancement of the lake’s biodiversity.
