Assam Governor Lauds RTI Act as a Pillar of Democracy at National Federation Meet
Guwahati: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya underscored the transformative role of the Right to Information (RTI) Act in strengthening Indian democracy, describing it as a powerful bridge between citizens and the government.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 32nd Board of Governors and 14th Annual General Body Meeting of the National Federation of Information Commissions in India (NFICI), the Governor said the RTI Act, 2005, has revolutionised public participation in governance by empowering citizens to seek answers and demand accountability.
“This Act empowers every citizen to question and obtain information, reinforcing the principle that the people are the true rulers,” he said.
He called the event a “celebration of transparency” in Indian democracy and stressed the law’s contribution to reducing corruption, improving public service delivery, and strengthening accountability.
Acharya also noted the Act’s significant impact on rural and marginalised communities, who have found a stronger voice through its use.
He urged stakeholders to make the RTI Act more digital, accessible, and user-friendly, adding that it should evolve beyond paperwork and become a part of public culture.
“Widespread awareness and innovation—through AI and data analytics—will help keep the Act relevant and effective,” he said, emphasizing the need for grassroots engagement, including workshops and training programs to empower citizens.
Chief Information Commissioner and NFICI President Heeralal Samariya and information commissioners from various states were present at the meeting.
