Assam Govt and IIT-G Signs MoU to Set up Multi-Specialty Hospital
Guwahati: The Assam government and the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G) on Friday have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create the Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHI) which will include an integrated multi-specialty 350-bed hospital.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
After signing the agreement, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that AAHI will usher in a new era of multidisciplinary medical research, and that breakthroughs at the new institute will boost India’s medical technology industry in the future years.
The project is expected to cost Rs 546 crores. The 350-bed hospital will be built on the IIT-Guwahati campus and will serve as a hub for doctors, researchers, and technicians.
The Assam Advance Health Innovation Institute would concentrate on advanced research and development in fields such as stem cell research, implantation, artificial intelligence, simulation labs, robotic surgery, and wearable electronics, among others.
The institute will have a total area of 50,000 square metres.
Commissioner and secretary in the department of health in the state, Sidhharth Singh said that the move aims to stimulate research in a variety of sectors of health sciences and technology.
While Assam would provide funding, the IIT will provide expertise and help identify research topics.
The project will be carried out through a special purpose vehicle governed by a board of directors.
Singh said Assam is “very eager to interact with private firms, corporate entities, and philanthropic organisations to come forward as well.”
CM Sarma also took to twitter to made the announcement. “AAHI will mark a new paradigm in interdisciplinary medical research & innovations at the upcoming institute will enhance India’s medical tech industry in the coming years. Our Govt has committed ₹546 cr for the project while IIT-G will contribute the required land & expertise,” the chief minister added.

While addressing the occasion, the union education minister said that the world-class multi-specialty hospital will assist bring global experience to the region and usher in a new era of healthcare and medical research. It will also serve as a solid foundation for India’s transformation towards a knowledge-based society.
