Assam Govt Announces Garden Holiday on Karam Puja
Guwahati: The Assam government on Tuesday proclaimed a “garden” holiday in the state’s tea estates on the occasion of the Adivasi and tea tribes’ Karam Puja.
The state government in its order said the holiday will be applicable only in the tea gardens of the state.
The edict specified that in lieu of the holiday, the garden employees would be required to labour on any other holiday or weekly day of rest that was determined by the particular tea garden administration.
The state’s tea-tribe and Adivasi communities received greetings from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on the occasion of the festival.
‘Johar! I wish all my brothers, sisters, elders, friends of tea-tribe and adivasi on the occasion of Karam Puja. I hope that the blessings of Karam Raja will bring peace, harmony, happiness and prosperity in the lives of all’, he said.
The harvest festival known as Karam Puja is observed in the Indian states of Assam, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and West Bengal,
The festival honours the god of strength, youth, and youthfulness known as “Karam-Devta,” who is worshipped during this time.
