Assam Govt Conducts Raid on Power Loom Centres

Guwahati: The government of Assam has taken a decisive action to enforce a total ban on the production of certain traditional handloom textiles on power looms and has undertaken and sudden raid on power loom centres in the state.

It is important to note that the government has created a unique application to detect products made using power looms.

The selling of power loom gamosas, mekhela sadors and power loom aronais has been outlawed from March 1 to April 14 in order to promote BIhu and its celebrations.

The restriction is a part of a bigger initiative to promote traditional weaving and discourage the use of manufactured goods.

Addressing the media on February 28, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “From March 1 to March 14 and afterwards also the sale of power loom gamosas, mekhela sadors, and power loom aronais has been banned.”

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 28 announced plans to attempt the world record for the largest Bihu dance performance on April 14 at Guwahati’s Sarusajai stadium. In order to enter the accomplishment into the Guinness Book of World Records, the event would involve 11,500 dancers and dholias performing the Assamese traditional folk dance in a single frame.
