Assam govt prepones summer vacation; vacation to start from June 25 amid flood

Guwahati: Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on Thursday announced that the summer break for students will begin on June 25 and last on July 25. The minister announced that due to the state’s deteriorating flood situation, the summer break has been postponed by a few days.

According to the minister, most schools are still closed in various areas owing to flooding, therefore they have chosen to postpone the start of the summer break, which typically begins the week of July 1st.

The ongoing exams will complete on June 25 after which the schools will remain closed for the summer, according to the education minister.

He further advised the private educational institutions to adhere to the same rule for the convenience of both the students and the professors.

In the past 24 hours, Assam’s devastating floods have claimed the lives of up to 12 more individuals, four of them were children.

With this, the state’s total number of fatalities from landslides and floods reached 100.

Four of the 12 recorded deaths came from the Hojai area, two from the Kamrup district, and three each from the Barpeta and Nalbari districts.

Over 54.7 lakh people have been impacted in 4,941 villages in 32 districts and 112 revenue circles of Assam, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

The districts that are still affected by the flood waters are Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Dima-Hasao, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong West, Karimganj, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, South Salmara, Tamulpur, Tinsukia and Udalguri.

The district administrations in the affected areas have set up a total of 845 relief camps and 1025 relief distribution centres where more than 2.71 lakh people are finding shelter.
