Assam Govt to conduct drive against ex-students residing in colleges & universities hostels

Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced that the government would shortly launch a campaign against illegal boarders at university residence halls under the banner of the “super border.”

Speaking to the media, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We are going to do three things. First, all previous students of a university shall not be permitted to stay in the dormitory.”

The Chief Minister also considered conducting a drive to inspect all university or college dorms in the near future if any former students are discovered living there under the guise of “super boundaries,” which would result in a 60% decrease in ragging instances.

Himanta Biswa Sarma also emphasised that there won’t be any ragging incidents if the police administration and the college or university authorities cooperate.

This follows a third-semester MCom student from Dibrugarh University who suffered a significant spinal injury after jumping off the dormitory building out of dread of ragging.

Anand Sharma, a first-semester Dibrugarh University student who was hurt after jumping off a building to flee ragging, underwent a difficult spinal operation at the Aditya Hospital in Dibrugarh on December 1.

According to reports, despite the surgery’s complexity, it was a success.

“The surgery is successfully completed. Anand Sharma is out of danger now. Renowned Neurosurgeon Dr Panna Lal performed the surgery. Anand will start walking and will be discharged from the hospital soon”, said Dr Nirmal Shahewala while speaking to reporters.

The surgery was essential as a result of Anand’s serious spinal damage. In the past, medical professionals had advised surgery to guarantee his ability to walk once more.
