Assam Gram Panchayats Shine with National Rural Development Awards
Assam: Assam celebrated a momentous achievement as two Gram Panchayats received prestigious National Panchayat Awards 2024, recognizing their outstanding contributions to rural development. President Droupadi Murmu conferred the awards during a ceremony in New Delhi on December 11, 2024.
• Jengrai Gram Panchayat, from Majuli district, was awarded the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar in the child-friendly panchayat category, receiving a cash prize of Rs 1 crore.
• Key achievements:
• Eradication of child labour and abuse.
• Establishment of 21 primary schools.
• Creation of seven playgrounds to enhance children’s educational and recreational opportunities.
• Bebejia Demow Bangthai Gram Panchayat, from Nagaon district, earned the Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar, along with a cash prize of Rs 1.25 crore for being the best Gram Panchayat. The panchayat’s innovative strategies have brought substantial development to six villages under the Khagarijan Panchayat Samiti.
Commissioner Keerthi Jalli received the awards on behalf of the Assam government, emphasizing the state’s dedication to grassroots development.
Rural Development Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass lauded the achievements, highlighting the panchayats’ commitment to improving the quality of life in rural communities. These accolades underline Assam’s efforts in advancing rural infrastructure, child welfare, and overall community development.
