Assam: Gunfire in Rangia’s Dipti Nagar Sparks Fear as Residents Call for Action Against Repeat Offender
Rangia, 13th September: An incident in Assam’s Rangia has brought attention to a pattern of lawlessness in the Dipti Nagar locality. On Wednesday, Jyoti Prakash Sharma, also known as Baba, allegedly fired two rounds from his registered 0.32 mm pistol, injuring Mridul Baniya during a dispute.
This is not the first time Sharma has been accused of dangerous behavior. Locals claim he has repeatedly brandished his weapon, with one notable incident during the 2022 Durga Puja, when he fired his gun near a place of worship, causing panic and almost resulting in a stampede.
Despite the police’s swift response in seizing Sharma’s weapon, residents remain terrified. They describe sleepless nights and constant fear, as Sharma reportedly fires his weapon at random times, especially late at night.
One resident expressed the community’s distress: “We cannot sleep at night as he keeps firing his weapon. We are terrorized by his actions.”
Baniya, the latest victim, was taken to Nalbari Medical College for treatment. Meanwhile, the community is urging authorities to take stricter action against Sharma to restore peace and safety in the area. Residents are calling for stronger measures to put an end to the reign of fear that has gripped their neighborhood.
