Assam: Guwahati Cops Nab ATM Fraudster From Guwahati

Guwahati: Two ATM fraudsters has been arrested by Geetanagar Police in Guwahati for allegedly duping several people of large sums of money on Friday.

The two allegedly committed fraud by copying and swapping out the ATM cards belonging to their victims.

The two arrested scammers have been identified as Mintu Rahman of Ganesh Nagar and Ramez Ali of Barpeta.

Police said that they had looted Chanik Basfar, a resident of Guwahati’s Bamunimaidam area and a retired railways employee of 25 lakh rupees.

They had swapped the ATMs to dupe him of the money. On August 11, they additionally stole Rs 77,000 from a lecturer at Dakshin Kamrup College. The victim was identified as Lakhi Kalita, a resident of Chandrapur area.

Police reported that they had collected a total of 36 ATM cards from the two, all belonging to various banks.

Moreover, two ATM swipe machines, two handmade pistols, a fake pistol, cash amounting Rs 18,000 and a newly purchased Fortuner vehicle were seized from their possession. The seized Fortuner car had registration numbers UP 15 AQ 8888.

Taking to Twitter to inform about the major arrest, Guwahati police wrote, “CGPD team from Geetanagar PS busts ATM swapping gang with the arrest of Mintu Rahman of Ganesh Nagar & Ramez Ali of Barpeta. 36 ATM cards, 2 POS swipe machines, 1 country made pistol, 1 dummy pistol, 1 Toyota Fortuner & ₹18,000 cash were recovered. Further investigation is on.”
