Assam: Guwahati Records Over 112 mm Rainfall; IMD Warns of More Downpours Till May 23
Guwahati witnessed a deluge of 112.5 mm rainfall since Monday night, crossing the critical 100 mm threshold, as the city continues to be battered by relentless monsoon downpours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stern warning that heavy to very heavy rainfall will persist across Assam, particularly in the western and southern regions, through May 23.
Rainfall data recorded from key monitoring stations on May 20 highlighted the widespread intensity of the weather system — 115 mm at the Assam Agricultural University’s Horticultural Research Station (AAU-HRS), 110 mm at the Mirza Circle Office, and 100 mm at the IASST facility in Kamrup. The figures underscore a concerning trend of consistent and widespread rainfall across the region.
According to IMD forecasts, isolated pockets of the state may experience rainfall as high as 200 mm in the coming days. In Guwahati, officials are increasingly concerned about worsening waterlogging in flood-prone zones, traffic disruptions, and the potential for tree falls and localized landslides in hillside areas.
Emergency response teams have been placed on high alert as municipal and district authorities monitor developments in real-time. The Chief Minister’s Office, in a social media update, assured citizens that the city’s disaster response mechanisms are fully activated and ready to address any emergent situation.
Residents, especially those living in vulnerable low-lying and erosion-prone areas, have been strongly advised to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain vigilant for any signs of flooding or land instability. The public is also urged to stay tuned to official weather advisories issued by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation and local disaster management authorities as the city braces for a prolonged period of severe weather.
