Assam: Health Emergency Hits Sribhumi Home Guards’ Hunger Strike as Protest Intensifies
Guwahati: The indefinite hunger strike launched by over a hundred home guards in Sribhumi district escalated late on Wednesday night, June 25, after two protesters collapsed from worsening health conditions. The duo was immediately rushed to Sribhumi Civil Hospital, prompting alarm over the deteriorating situation at the protest site.
The demonstration, which began earlier in the day, centers on long-pending demands, primarily the regularisation of the home guards’ employment. Despite the gravity of the protest and prior communication with authorities, protesters alleged that district health officials failed to provide even basic emergency support. They claimed that no ambulance was stationed at the site, despite informing the Joint Director of the Health Department in advance.
“What if someone dies here? Will the authorities still remain indifferent?” one protester asked, voicing frustration at what they described as systemic apathy. The absence of timely medical intervention has intensified public scrutiny of the administration’s response to the unfolding crisis.
Nevertheless, the protesters remain steadfast. Undeterred by the health scare, they have vowed to continue the hunger strike until the government provides a written assurance addressing their demands. The home guards, many of whom have served under temporary contracts for years, are demanding permanent appointments and better welfare provisions.
As the standoff enters a critical phase, the onus now lies on the administration to prevent further health emergencies and open dialogue with the protestors to resolve the impasse.
