Assam: Heavy Rains Trigger Flash Floods Across Guwahati, Disrupting Daily Life

Guwahati, 1st September: Intense early morning rainfall on September 1 has unleashed flash floods across several parts of Guwahati, plunging the city into chaos. The heavy downpour has led to widespread waterlogging, severely disrupting daily life and movement in the affected areas.

Localities such as Chandmari, Beltola, Hatigaon, Six-mile, Noonmati, and Kahilipara are among the worst-hit, with streets submerged under stormwater. Residents in these areas are facing significant difficulties as the water levels continue to rise, threatening to keep roads inundated throughout the day.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Guwahati’s Regional Meteorological Centre have issued warnings of further heavy rainfall, particularly in the Dispur and Sonapur areas, advising residents to exercise caution.

This latest incident of urban flooding mirrors a similar crisis that struck the city on June 5, when relentless rains led to severe waterlogging in several localities, including Chandmari, Hatigaon, Sijubari, and Six-mile. The recurring floods underscore the pressing need for improved urban drainage systems to prevent such disruptions in the future.

As Guwahati grapples with the aftermath of the flash floods, residents and commuters are urged to stay alert and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
