Assam: Highest Civilian Award Conferred Upon Renowned Physician Dr. Tapan Saikia
Guwahati: Renowned medical practitioner Dr. Tapan Saikia received Assam’s highest civilian honor the “Assam Baibhav” at a ceremony conducted at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakhetra in Guwahati on March 24. The state government hosted the ceremony to recognise those who have made noteworthy achievements in a variety of sectors.
Dr. Saikia was given the honour for his outstanding contributions to the healthcare industry, particularly in raising cancer awareness and encouraging early detection in Assam and other northeastern regions. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma attended the award presentation by Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria.
Dr. Saikia was one of 21 citizens from various areas who received one of three state civilian awards for their exceptional service. The “Assam Saurav” award which honours excellence in sports, science, healthcare, and public service was also given to five famous individuals.
Gilbartson Sangma and Smt. Nayanmoni Saikia were awarded for their sporting accomplishments while Krishna Roy was given the “Assam Saurav” award for his commitment to art and culture.
Dr. Sashidhar Phukan received the award for his noteworthy work in healthcare and public service while Dr. Binoy Kumar Saikia was honoured for his commitment to science.
15 people received the “Assam Gaurav” award at the ceremony for their outstanding achievements in a variety of professions. People who work in the public sector, agriculture and related industries, tourism, social work, entrepreneurship, horticulture and other fields were among the awardees.
