Assam: Home Guards Launch Indefinite Hunger Strike in Sribhumi, Demand Permanent Jobs
Sribhumi, Assam: Home Guards in Assam’s Sribhumi district have escalated their long-standing protest, embarking on an indefinite hunger strike today, June 25th. The personnel gathered at the District Commissioner’s protest site, their voices resonating with slogans demanding an end to what they term systemic neglect and precarious service conditions.
At the heart of their agitation are three key demands: the immediate amendment of the archaic Home Guards Act, 1947, the complete abolition of the six-month contractual appointment system that keeps them in a perpetual state of uncertainty, and ultimately, the permanent regularization of their employment. Protesting Home Guards articulated their frustration, stating that the current setup denies them any semblance of continuity or financial stability, pushing them into a cycle of insecurity.
“We are not asking for privileges; we are demanding the dignity of stable employment and legal recognition,” declared one demonstrator, encapsulating the sentiment of the protesting group. The Home Guards also issued a stark warning, indicating that a more widespread, state-level agitation across Assam is imminent if their grievances are not addressed by the authorities.
