Assam Honours Bhupen Uzir’s Legacy with Musical Extravaganza on 72nd Birth Anniversary
Guwahati: A prestigious cultural event was held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra to commemorate the 72nd birth anniversary of the late renowned music director and sound recordist, Bhupen Uzir. Organized by the Bhupen Uzir Smriti Raksha Samiti in collaboration with the Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Government of Assam, the event drew numerous cultural dignitaries and music enthusiasts.
The musical evening, titled “Hiya Bhora Xubhokamonare,” featured a diverse array of musical artistes performing timeless melodies that captivated the audience. Four eminent artistes were honored with the Bhupen Uzir Suwaroni Shilpo Sadhana Award for their substantial contributions to instrumental music and sound recording in Assam. The awardees included guitarist Sourabh Kumar Das, violinist and guitarist Dilip Rasaily, saxophonist Pitambar Tamuly, and recordist Satish Chauhan.
The event also announced the winners of an online competition that showcased interpretations of Bhupen Uzir’s timeless works. In the ‘A’ category (under 14 years), the winners were:
– First Prize: Jigyasa Kashyap
– Second Prize: Pragya Konwar
– Third Prize: Shruti Madhujya
In the ‘B’ category (over 14 years), the winners were:
– First Prize: Taneesha Saikia
– Second Prize: Ratan Konwar
– Third Prize: Junak Nibir Kashyap
Each winner received cash awards, certificates, and a trophy.
The event featured performances by various vocalists, including Shashwati Phukan, Queen Hazarika, and Manash Hazarika, among others. A new song, “Smritir Avesh,” was unveiled, featuring the vocals of Shanta Uzir, lyrics by Manjula Hazarika, and musical arrangements by Sourav Mahanta. The event concluded with a collaborative instrumental performance by prominent musicians.
