Assam: “I don’t have anything to say now. I can’t accept what the CBI said,” SI Junmoni Rabha’s Mother

Guwahati, 7th February: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has concluded its probe into the tragic death of SI Jonmani Rabha and filed a chargesheet in all three cases. The chargesheet was submitted in a Nagaon court today, marking the end of the investigation into the case. However, Jonmani Rabha’s mother expressed dissatisfaction with the CBI’s findings.

Reacting to the news of the chargesheet, Sumitra Rabha, the bereaved mother of late Sub-Inspector (SI) Junmoni Rabha expressed her discontent, stating, “I don’t have words to express my feelings today. I cannot accept the findings of the CBI. I have said everything I could. If my daughter had been lying on the bed with broken limbs, I could have determined whether it was a road accident or foul play. Now, with no witnesses or evidence, I have provided all the information I had. Now, it’s up to the people to judge.”

The chargesheet filed by the CBI denies any involvement of murder or extremism in Jonmani Rabha’s death. It may be recalled that SI Jonmani Rabha of Morikolong police station died in a mysterious accident on the night of May 16 last year, leading to various allegations and suspicions surrounding her death. Despite the family’s claims that Jonmani did not die in an accident but was killed, the CBI’s report refutes such allegations.

The investigation into Jonmani Rabha’s death was initially handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and later transferred to the CBI following a request from Assam’s Director General of Police G P Singh, who urged the Chief Minister to prioritize the family’s demands and public sentiments. Consequently, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma directed the CBI to probe the case, leading to the formation of a dedicated team led by Lovely Katiyar.

After completing its investigation, the CBI has now submitted its report in the form of a chargesheet, bringing some closure to the case. However, the dissatisfaction expressed by Jonmani Rabha’s mother indicates that the matter may continue to be subject to public scrutiny and debate.
