Assam: IED Found in Guwahati’s Gandhi Mandap; Security Forces Launch Statewide Search Operation

Guwahati, 15th August: Security forces in Assam have successfully recovered several Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and suspicious materials, foiling potential bomb threats in the state. The recoveries come after the banned outfit United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) claimed to have planted bombs in 24 locations across Assam, including eight in Guwahati.

In a significant recovery, an IED was found wrapped in black polythene and concealed in a box beneath a transformer on the road to Gandhi Mandap in Guwahati. The police have secured the device and cordoned off the area.

Earlier in the day, suspicious materials were recovered in Panbazar and Gandhi Basti, while another bomb-like material was found near Panbazar Police Station. The materials were wrapped in polythene and have been secured by the police.

Security forces across Assam have intensified surveillance and launched extensive search operations in response to the ULFA-I bomb threat. In Guwahati, key roads have been cordoned off, and intensive checking operations are underway.

ULFA-I had issued a press release claiming to have planted bombs in various districts as a protest against Independence Day celebrations. The group had called on security forces to locate and defuse the devices.
