Assam: IIT Guwahati Student Joins ISIS, Pens Open Letter on LinkedIn

Guwahati, 23rd March: In a concerning turn of events, it has been reported that a student from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has joined the ranks of the terrorist organization ISIS. Identified as Tauseef Ali Farooqui, the student’s allegiance to ISIS has raised alarm bells in the security apparatus.

According to initial reports, Farooqui was allegedly taken from Guwahati’s Pan Bazaar locality by members of ISIS. Subsequently, he conveyed his decision to join the extremist group through an email, detailing the reasons behind his drastic choice.

This development comes on the heels of the recent arrest of two high-ranking ISIS leaders in Assam. Haris Farooqi, also known as Harish Ajmal Farukhi, and Anurag Singh, alias Rehan, were apprehended by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Assam Police in the Dharmasala area of Dhubri after crossing the international border.

Haris Farooqi, a resident of Chakrata, Dehradun, is believed to be the head of ISIS in India, while his associate, Anurag Singh, originally from Diwana, Panipat, has reportedly converted to Islam. The duo, described as highly indoctrinated and motivated members of ISIS, have been implicated in various illicit activities, including recruitment, terror funding, and plotting attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) across India.

Facing multiple pending cases with agencies such as the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Delhi and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Lucknow, among others, the two individuals are set to be handed over to the NIA by the STF Assam for further legal proceedings.

The arrest of these high-ranking ISIS operatives, coupled with the news of a student from IIT Guwahati joining the terrorist group, underscores the ongoing challenges posed by extremism and terrorism. Authorities remain vigilant as they work to combat the threat posed by such organizations and prevent further radicalization within the country.
