Assam: Illegal Timber Smuggling Uncovered in Karbi Anglong’s Dolamara Region

Guwahati: The Dolamara region in Karbi Anglong near Bokakhat has become a hotspot for illegal timber smuggling, with culprits employing sophisticated methods reminiscent of the Telugu film “Pushpa” to transport valuable timber undetected.

In a recent operation, authorities from the Dolamara Forest Range Office seized two trucks, bearing registration numbers AS 05 C 4784 and AS 03 AC 6057, that concealed timber beneath layers of sand and hay.

However, a third vehicle carrying timber, similarly hidden under sand, was reportedly released earlier in the day by the forest department under unclear circumstances, raising concerns about the enforcement measures in place.

The smuggling operation has been linked to several suspects, including Abdul Salim alias Batu from Bokakhat and Rang and Philip from Dolamara Dadhara, who remain at large.

Efforts to apprehend the culprits are ongoing, though delays in action have sparked criticism from local residents and environmental activists.

The illegal timber trade poses a severe threat to the region’s rich forest resources, prompting calls for stronger monitoring and accountability.

Environmentalists have urged authorities to adopt stricter enforcement mechanisms to curb the illegal activities and safeguard Karbi Anglong’s invaluable natural heritage.
