Assam: Indian Army Launches Rescue Mission for Trapped Miners in Dima Hasao
Assam: The Indian Army has initiated a large-scale Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) mission to rescue miners trapped in a flooded coal mine in the “3 Kilo” area of Dima Hasao, near the Assam-Meghalaya border. The mine was inundated, leaving an estimated 15 to 20 miners stranded underground.
Responding to an urgent request from the Assam State Administration, conveyed by the state’s Home Secretary, the Army swiftly mobilized resources. At 6:30 AM, the 32 Assam Rifles Pathfinder Unit arrived on-site as the first responders, conducting an initial assessment and coordinating rescue efforts.
Given the gravity of the situation, an Engineer Task Force (ETF), led by the Commanding Officer of an Engineer Regiment, was deployed to provide technical expertise. The Army has also mobilized specialized PARA diving teams to navigate the challenges posed by the flooded mine. Additional reinforcements, including personnel from the Assam Rifles and ETF, are en route to strengthen the rescue operations.
To support the effort, aerial reconnaissance has been initiated. A helicopter carrying senior officials, including the Chief Engineer of the Dimapur-based Corps HQ, the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East), and the Commanding Officer of the PARA unit, is conducting real-time assessments of the site. These insights are expected to guide on-ground teams and expedite rescue operations.
The mine’s remote location, coupled with rugged terrain and limited infrastructure, has posed significant challenges to the rescue teams. Despite these obstacles, the Army remains resolute in its mission to ensure the safety of the trapped miners.
Dima Hasao Superintendent of Police (SP) Mayank Kumar Jha confirmed that multiple miners remain trapped, though the exact number is yet to be determined. “We fear multiple people are trapped, but the exact number is yet to be determined,” he stated.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been actively monitoring the situation, calling for expedited efforts and emphasizing the importance of the Army’s involvement in the operation.
The relief task force comprises expert divers, sappers, and personnel equipped with specialized tools for such operations. The Army’s official statement reiterated their commitment to a swift and coordinated response to the disaster.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with the Army and local authorities working tirelessly to locate and bring the miners to safety. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
