Assam: India’s First River Terminal Set to Revolutionize Transportation in Guwahati
Guwahati, 11th May: Guwahati, Assam, is on the brink of a transportation revolution with the establishment of India’s first river terminal, promising to reshape logistics and connectivity in the region.
Initiated under the visionary leadership of Assam’s Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, construction works for the Guwahati Gateway Ghat (GGG) commenced on May 13, 2022. This landmark project, funded by the World Bank, underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and driving economic growth in the state.
Situated on the south bank of the mighty Brahmaputra River, Guwahati serves as the nerve center of northeastern India. The strategically located GGG is poised to catalyze economic activity by facilitating seamless transportation of goods and passengers along the river.
Designed by the Ports & Waterways teams in India, the GGG boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure, including amenities such as cafes, a canteen, and accessibility ramps. These features ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for passengers, setting new standards for river terminals in the country.
The terminal’s significance extends beyond mere convenience; it represents a paradigm shift in Assam’s transportation landscape. By harnessing the potential of waterways, the GGG promises to alleviate congestion on roads, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance overall efficiency in the movement of goods and people.
Moreover, the GGG is set to stimulate tourism and cultural exchange by providing access to nearby river access points, or ‘ghats,’ for both locals and visitors alike. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision to leverage Assam’s natural assets for sustainable development and inclusive growth.
As construction progresses, anticipation mounts for the completion of the Guwahati Gateway Ghat, heralding a new era of connectivity and prosperity for the people of Assam.
