Assam Initiates Formation of Three High-Level Committees for Cultural Mapping of State’s Ethnic Art & Culture
Guwahati, 12th December: In an inaugural session held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati on December 11, the Assam Government convened the first meeting of the General Advisory Committee (GAC) for the cultural mapping of Assam’s ethnic Art & Culture. The primary objective is to document the diverse cultural traditions and heritage of each ethnic community within the state.
This initiative is spearheaded by the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra Society in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Assam. During the meeting, the government underscored the significance of meticulous attention to detail and the economic aspects involved in the data collection process for this cultural mapping endeavor. The valuable input from committee officials was acknowledged, with their suggestions considered crucial in crafting a comprehensive district-wise cultural map.
The meeting, chaired by State Cabinet Minister Bimal Borah, saw the presence of distinguished dignitaries from the cultural realm of the state. Assam boasts a rich cultural tapestry, being home to over 200 diverse ethnic tribes and communities. In light of this, the decision was made to conduct a cultural map for each of Assam’s indigenous tribes and communities. This comprehensive and systematic documentation aims to capture the essence of the rich cultural traditions, heritage, and history of each diverse ethnic group in the region.
