Assam: Inmate Escapes from Dhubri Medical College and Hospital
Guwahati, 15th February: A significant jailbreak unfolded on Thursday morning as an inmate managed to escape from Dhubri Medical College and Hospital, raising questions about the efficacy of law enforcement in Dhubri. Goljar Uddin Ahmed, also known as Raju, had been admitted to the hospital on February 6 due to health issues, as confirmed by Prashanta Rajbongshi, the district jail superintendent of Dhubri.
Goljar, who had been serving a ten-year sentence with a fine of one lakh in Dhubri District Jail, took advantage of the situation and absconded from Dhubri Medical College and Hospital on February 15. The escape occurred due to alleged negligence on the part of the police officers on duty, causing alarm within the community.
Earlier, on January 3, 2023, Goljar Uddin Ahmed and his brother Gafur Uddin Ahmed, both residents of Ward No. 13, IG Road, Dhubri, were found guilty under section 22 (c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. They were sentenced to ten years of hard labor each, along with a fine of one lakh rupees.
The incident underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing the rampant drug trade and consumption in Dhubri district, which shares a border with Bangladesh. The prevalence of such activities poses a significant threat to public health and security in the region.
