Assam: Intense Protests Erupt in Kokrajhar Over Alleged Disparaging Remarks by Domino’s Director
Guwahati, 4th August: Kokrajhar witnessed significant unrest as members of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), Bodo National Students’ Union (BONSU), and All Assam Tribal Association staged a protest against Pritam De Roy, the director of a Domino’s Pizza outlet on JD Road. The protests were sparked by allegations that De Roy, who operates the shop from Uttar Pradesh, made derogatory comments about his Bodo colleagues, referring to them as “adivasis” and “forest dwellers.”
Protesters gathered at the Domino’s location, demanding immediate action against De Roy for his reported offensive remarks aimed at young Bodo girls. The demonstrations highlighted the community’s outrage and sense of injustice over the alleged insults.
A memorandum was submitted to the Assam Chief Minister through the Kokrajhar District Commissioner, and a formal complaint was lodged with the Kokrajhar Sadar Police Station, calling for De Roy’s arrest. Reports indicate that De Roy is currently avoiding capture and remains at large.
An ABSU leader criticized De Roy’s conduct, accusing him of using inappropriate language, including calling Bodo girls “prostitutes” and alleging that Bodos are from China and Bhutan. “De Roy also threatened Bodo workers and made these statements on WhatsApp,” the leader claimed.
The ABSU leader expressed deep concern over De Roy’s remarks, emphasizing their detrimental impact on community cohesion. “We are proud Indians with a tribal President, a fact De Roy appears to disregard,” the leader noted. “His comments threaten the peace and unity of our community.”
